Researchers with the University of Illinois looked at the eating styles of greater than 18,000 adults and discovered a fascinating pattern: Participants slashed their total caloric intake when they increased the number of water they drank every day by merely one measly percent.

Those who increased their mineral water consumption-just tap or bottled, nothing fancy-by one, two, or three cups saved anywhere from 68 to 205 calories every day.

Why? At most elementary, water helps satiate and leaves less room for junk, says Keri Gans, R.D., author of The Small Diet Change. “Lots times somebody thinks they are often hungry but actually, they are slightly dehydrated instead,” Gans says. So you may be grabbing a snack when all that you have the need for is really a glass of water.

The research also learned that people who increased their water intake consumed less sodium (around 235g), less sugar (by up to 18g), and much less cholesterol (by as much as 21g).
